A skip is a large container that is open at the top and is designed to be loaded onto a special type of truck.

Skip bins usually have a special shape. The part that you can see from the top or the side is either a trapezium or two stacked trapezia. The lower trapezium has a smaller edge at the bottom of the skip bin, and a longer edge at the top. The smaller edge on either end is lower which makes it easier to load.

There are two lugs on each side of the bin. Chains can be attached to the lugs. This permits the heavy skip bin to be lifted onto and off a skip lorry or skip truck. A special skip-carrying crane is used.

One end of the skip has a large door that opens down. This allows people to put things in and take things out by hand -- these skips are called 'drop-door skips'.
